Safety hazards and cluttered

I hope if the agent / owner read this they take it as constructive criticism rather than a complaint because this place deserves to be so much better than it is and there are real safety issues here. The key is to get the owner to abandon his ‘make do and mend’ repairs and employ skilled trade people. The place itself is tired and desperately needs some TLC and a little money spent on it however,
If you want peace, tranquility and solitude then this could be the place for you and a partner, but it comes at a cost. I’ll split this review into two parts, inside and outside starting with the latter because that is where the real safety issues lie.
Outside :
Lets start with the track, which is not for the faint hearted and as the agent advises is not suitable for sports cars. It’s rough gravel / rocks and steep in places, our rented fiat 500 did get up and down but with constant worry about losing my rental deposit and damaging tyres which would not be covered. Honestly, i recommend an SUV or 4x4, and if you meet another vehicle coming in the opposite direction it is a battle of wills as to who reverses first !
On the first afternoon after a flight and car journey i thought a dip in the pool would cool me off. Stepped onto the ladder which promptly gave way dumping me in a cold pool gasping for breath like a stranded Hippo and with the ladder on top. Reported the problem, the owner came the next day and ‘repaired’ the broken ladder with Gaffer Tape. The repair left the ladder short of the pool bottom so when we tried a dip again the same thing happened except this time i was ready and jumped to dry land ! A new part was sourced and fitted within a week. Returned from a day out, hot and bothered and decided to take a dip but found the foot plate of the ladder floating on top of the pool. Percy, the auto pool cleaner had got his umbilical cord wrapped around the ladder and pulled the thing off. We tried to push it back into place but found it to be the wrong shape and at this point gave up using the pool. I guess it never did fit properly and poor old Percy will get the blame.
The BBQ was left dirty and rusty, and we do like a BBQ on holiday. This begs the question, why pay a cleaning fee?
The washing machine can be found around the back under a leaking lean-to. This has to be plugged in via an extension lead and external sockets which are broken, and on this occasion wet. In any case when we ran the extension to an internal socket the machine didn’t work. Later in the week the owner came to fix the pool ladder and showed us how to work the machine (there are no instructions), he showed no hesitation in plugging the extension lead into the wet sockets, but should guests be exposed to the risk of electrocution ? A professionally fitted roof over the shelter might help protect from the rain. Also, new water proof sockets which if they were extended 3m would be behind the washing machine eliminating the need for an extension lead, which by the way was also wet when we found it.
There is a loose slab on steps leading to the pool this tips forward when stepped on, this simply needs re-cementing into place. Mind you, this isn’t a problem for us because we cant use the pool !
On the first day the owner agreed to repair the sunshade, it looked like a piece which joined the shade to the stand was missing, i reminded him when he returned to fix the pool ladder. He went off to his hoard of bits and pieces and came back with another old parasol stand which did the job. Once he had left i noticed a pin was hanging out of the swivel joint, the owner has a draw full of clutter in the kitchen, including a hammer, so i knocked the pin back into place. Next time we used the shade the pin came out and is clearly warn so like the pool we gave up using it.
There is a hose running under a rose arch as you enter the property, this is a trip hazard, not so much during the day but at night when it is pitch black it could be a problem.
The foam pads and covers on the lounger chairs are warn to a point where you legs rest on the metal frame.
Inside :
Inside could be so much better. There is no lounge seating however with a little thought the downstairs area could easily accommodate a small sofa or two arm chairs. Remove the large table and replace it with a smaller one, better still, repurpose the existing table making one suitable for two people instead of six !Loose the freezer ( is it ever used ), move the fridge to where the oven is, the height of the fridge cabinet would need adjusting to take the stairs into account but this is easy to do. The oven goes under the hob and hey presto a space opens up for lounge seating and perhaps a small coffee table. There is evidence that a larger hob had previously been in place and the gap created in the worktop has been bodged with a old piece of melamine, the worktop needs replacing. By moving the oven the large draws will be lost but the first is full of enough cutlery to serve the village, the second is full of the owners junk, and the third is full of pans and chopping boards, why you need all this in a place for two people is beyond me especially when a couple of the pans cant be used on the induction hob! Anyway, with a good sort out you could fit all the place needs in a new smaller draw pack fitted alongside the new position for the oven and perhaps a frying pan and a few saucepans can be hung on a rail. The extractor is for a bigger hob so if this was replaced there would be room for such a rail alongside. If i were doing this job i would remove the kitchen, face the stone wall with plywood and plasterboard, and plaster this would give a flat surface to refit the kitchen to. As it is the cupboards and doors hang crooked.
The villa only needs an adequate number of plates and cups etc rather than a mixed bag of too many which again take up usable space.
Double bowl sink for two people. Why? Replace with a single sink and drainer effectively doubling the work top space. In any case the plugs in the kitchen sinks don’t work and there is water laying in the sink cupboard which appears to come from the left hand sink.
Dishes were coming out of the dishwasher dirty, i found a disgusting dishwasher filter, honestly it looked like things were growing in it and I doubt it had ever been cleaned. This again begs the question why pay a €70 cleaning charge. Anyway, popped to Subbiano bought a dishwasher cleaner for €1.90 and thought this might help, only to discover the water in the machine doesn’t get hot and therefore wont melt the cap on the cleaning solution bottle. So, the left hand sink leaks, the right hand sink plug doesn’t work, there is no bowl and the dishwasher doesn’t get hot how are we supposed to wash up ! Even if you do manage to wash the dishes there is no where to put them because there is no drainer.
The toilet continues to run after flushing so unless you have ‘the knack’ it will never fill up, trick is to pump the button a few times.
There is occasionally a stench of sewerage but i guess this is to be expected in such a rural location.
The shower tray seemed ‘spongy’ and upon closer inspection there are hairline cracks in the gel coat of the fibreglass. We stayed away from this area for fear of falling through.
The whole site needs a good de clutter inside and out.
The owner agreed to come on Saturday to change the linen, instead we found a bag of clean linen on the door step on the Friday.
As the site is a distance from any shops a welcome pack would have been a nice touch, that said the owner did present is with a nice bottle of wine.
Anyway got to go, my wife just called to say the dishwasher is leaking ! A quick clean of the door seal seems to have stopped this but this sums the place up, it if full of issues which are mostly due to lack of maintenance and the skill to repair things properly. The place is tired and deserves a little investment to make it great again. And if the owner really wanted to push the boat out he should take a look at the pool, one end appears to be subsiding and if he really wanted to improve safety and usability, rebuild the deck extending it to the bank which would eliminate the need for what looks like a bridge made from a pallet and also provide an area for sun loungers poolside.
One last point, does it make sense to have two coffee machines in a villa for two people, but no kettle !
